North American Cultural Laboratory

North American Cultural Laboratory

The Outrage is hosted by North American Cultural Laboratory, an artist-run, member-supported, nonprofit residency center dedicated to research and development in the performing arts.

NACL was conceived in 1997 as an ensemble of theatre practitioners led by co-founding Artistic Directors Brad Krumholz and Tannis Kowalchuk. More than 25 years and 20 original productions later, NACL has evolved into a performing arts residency center serving diverse artists from around the country, the continent, and beyond.

MISSION - North American Cultural Laboratory provides a haven for artists and ensembles to explore their craft, experiment with new work, and share their investigations in ways that have a profound impact on their practice, the field of performance, and the public.

Located in Highland Lake, NY, two hours from New York City in the southwestern Catskill Mountains, the NACL complex includes a performance and rehearsal hall and adjacent artist residence. The grounds include a private yard and two wooded acres, providing opportunities to work or relax outdoors.

A short walk across the street leads to the shore of Highland Lake, accessible to all who stay at NACL. There are also lovely walking and biking roads surrounding the retreat center, and a number of hiking paths and swimming holes accessible by car.

THE THEATRE - Once a Franciscan church, the historic building has been converted into an open space, with beautiful 36' x 72' wooden floors, lofty, arched, pressed tin ceilings, and all the amenities of a professional theatre. The space is perfect for rehearsals, meetings, workshops, and performances.

LAKEWOOD HOUSE - Located next door to the theatre, the 1920’s gambrel-style residence was once a summer resort hotel in the heyday of the Catskills vacation era. Newly renovated, the NACL artistic and administrative home, boasts a large, fully-equipped kitchen, a common room, a wrap-around porch, outdoor eating areas, and 12 single and double occupancy bedrooms.
